Our History

CNET Research Centre is part of University College London’s School of Slavonic and East European Studies (SSEES). Founded in 1915, today SSEES is Britain’s largest centre for studies on Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe and Russia.

As the economies of these previously communist countries transitioned to capitalism, so, over the last 20 years, the focus of our Research Centre also adapted. What we now focus on are the economic challenges that lie ahead and how we can move in a direction that means the best possible outcomes for people and the planet.

Given the interdisciplinary history of the school, CNET is in a unique position to combine the insights and methodologies of economists, historians and social scientists to create rich ideas and novel solutions to some of the most pressing problems in economic transitions that we face today.
